Update:

Look, we Dallas Cowboys fans must take positive news where we can get it this season (and most seasons...). The narrow loss to the Philadelphia Eagles was about the only time we may have thought they’re not as bad as we expected. But after the last two games against the New York Giants and the Chicago Bears, that small glimmer of hope is gone.

But there’s one statistic in which the ‘Boys actually are doing better than expected this season, and it’s mostly thanks to running back Javonte Williams.

Surprise: The Cowboys’ backfield is the most physical in football

Coming into the 2025 season, Dallas was heavily criticized for lacking a true RB1. I was one of them. But the backfield has been proving doubters wrong.

Javonte Williams, finally healthy, is powering a resurgence with 227 yards and three touchdowns through three weeks, ranking among the NFL’s top rushers at seventh in the league. Dallas also leads the league in yards after contact per carry (4.41), showcasing their physicality.

Miles Sanders has been a steady complement, while rookie Jaydon Blue could add more explosiveness if given opportunities. It’s a mystery why they chose to use wide receiver CeeDee Lamb as a back in Sunday’s loss to the Bears, but now that he’s unavailable for either that or as a receiving weapon, Dallas may lean on its unexpectedly strong ground game even more in the weeks ahead.
