COWBOYS
The Dallas Cowboys’ underwhelming answer at wide receiver
The Cowboys have a star at the WR position, but he’s currently holding out while the core behind him remains thin. This was Dallas’ unenthusiastic solution.
With Cowboys star wide receiver CeeDee Lamb still stubbornly sticking to his holdout as he awaits a contract extension, some of the younger receivers like Jalen Tolbert, Jalen Brooks, and Tyron Billy-Johnson have gotten a chance to step up and show what they can do during training camp.
However, although they have had a decent showing so far, the Cowboys depth chart at the wide receiver position leaves much to be desired behind Lamb. And yet, Dallas has decided once again to go the cheapest route possible and sign two UFL receivers instead of shopping for a top free agent in the NFL.
Cowboys sign Deontay Burnett and Kelvin Harmon
No one is expecting the Cowboys to sign a big name like Brandon Aiyuk, but of all the free agents out there, they chose instead to sign two UFL wideouts.
Burnett played in the XFL for the Houston Roughnecks during the 2023 season and did well, but was picked up by the Arlington Renegades during the USFL-XFL merger. He started five out of 10 games for the Renegades, ending with 306 receiving yards and two touchdowns.
Harmon played in the NFL for the Washington Commanders in 2019, ending that season with 365 receiving yards, but wasn’t able to stick on any other NFL teams after that. After dealing with some injuries and taking some time off, he signed with the DC Defenders for the 2024 season. That’s where he finally shone. Harmon ended up with 375 receiving yards and three touchdowns, leading the team in all receiving categories before an injury in Week 7.
So, should fans be happy the Cowboys finally did something when that something was to sign two UFL players rather than any other top NFL free agents out there? Or, I don’t know...give CeeDee the contract extension already? You can say yes or no, but either way, I don’t think most fans will be satisfied with this move.
