Update:

Micah Parsons’ trade from the Cowboys to the Packers is the story in the NFL at the moment. The surprise move is dominating the build-up to the new season, which kicks off with Dallas visiting the Philadelphia Eagles on Thursday, September 4.

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has insisted Parsons’ departure is “in the best interests” of the Texas franchise, a view few others seem to share. That certainly appears to be the case for the vast majority of fans, as well as many bookmakers, who have lengthened the Cowboys’ already slim odds of winning a first Super Bowl since 1995.

Dallas’ Super Bowl hopes take a major hit

Following Parsons’ move, Dallas has slipped from 50-1 to 60-1 with BetMGM, as highlighted by Yahoo Sports. That, in theory, gives them as much chance of winning the Super Bowl as the Seattle Seahawks.

The Cowboys, who began last season at 20-1 but failed to reach the postseason, now face their worst preseason odds since 2014, when they were listed at 75-1, according to Sports Odds History.

Packers’ odds surge with Parsons arrival

The Packers, on the other hand, have been bumped up the list of contenders as a result of Parsons joining. Already an 11-win team in 2024, their odds with BetMGM have been cut from 22-1 to 13-1, taking them from 10th favorite to sixth favorite.

Obviously, there are no guarantees, which is the beauty of competitive sport. But few would argue that the Packers have traded up before a snap has been played.

Record-breaking contract for Parsons

Parsons joins Green Bay on a record four-year, $188 million contract that includes $136 million guaranteed. His new average salary of $47 million per season makes him the highest-paid non-quarterback in NFL history.

The Cowboys agreed to the trade in exchange for defensive tackle Kenny Clark, along with two first-round draft picks in 2026 and 2027.
