The moment Caleb Williams knew the Bears needed to fire Shane Waldron
The Chicago Bears offensive coordinator is out after just ten games, failing to get the best from the No. 1 draft pick quarterback.
Chicago Bears quarterback Caleb Williams suffered nine sacks on Sunday, compounding the misery of a 3-19 home loss to the New England Patriots.
Williams, the No. 1 overall pick of the 2024 NFL Draft, has failed to find form in his rookie season in the league and the Bears have acted swiftly to make a change.
Offensive coordinator Shane Waldron was fired on Tuesday, seeing him exit the role after just ten games. The Bears’ offense has not yet found any real rhythm and a clip shared on social media after last weekend’s loss appeared to show a rift between Waldron and Williams.
News of Waldron’s exit broke on Tuesday but there had also been some question around Williams’ future as the starting QB. The 22-year-old’s QBR figure for 2024 is just 38.4, putting him 29th out of 32 quarterbacks in the league.
However head coach Matt Eberflus insisted on Sunday that Caleb Williams would remain the starter, before going on to hint at the change that we have seen today.
“There will be changes, adjustments, being made,” Eberflus told reporters. “I’m not going to disclose those right now. I’m not at that point in the process. Monday is a long day in terms of the evaluation of everything, in terms of lineups, in terms of the coaching, in terms of how we need to do better in that coaching and in that communication in-game, during the game, after the game, prior to the game. It’s important that we take time to make those decisions and make the right decisions that’s for the Bears.”
