The Monday-after-Super Bowl Sunday could finally be a holiday thanks to potential NFL schedule change
What NFL fan hasn’t dreamt of having the day off from work or school the day after the Super Bowl? Well, it could finally be a reality in the near future.

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell has a vision for the league that goes far beyond the league as we know it today. He’s already introducing more and more international games each year, with eight set to take place for the 2025 season. Six have already been confirmed, for London, Madrid, Berlin, and Dublin, and the NFL is expected to return to São Paulo and Mexico City. The NFL also recently announced they’ll be playing their first-ever game in Australia in 2026, and Goodell said he hopes to eventually have up to 16 international games in a season.
Goodell’s vision for the future of the NFL
But his vision goes beyond that. Goodell has already implemented a longer NFL regular season. In 2021, it was changed from a 16-game to a 17-game season. Goodell has repeatedly said that he wants to make the season even longer.
Goodell would like to have an 18-game season, and many owners agree and hope to see the change implemented within the next two or three years already. And there’s one consequence to an 18-game season that fans would love, and that’s the potential for a Monday off following Super Bowl Sunday.
Make Super Bowl Monday a federal holiday.

When the league changed to a 17-game season, the preseason went from four to three games, a change I think most would agree has been positive. With an 18-game regular season, it would take the preseason down to two games. Again, I don’t think we’ll see a lot of complaints there.
But more importantly, the addition of one more regular season game would push back the Super Bowl one more week again, which would land it on the same weekend as President’s Day, which is always celebrated on the third Monday in February, and which is already a federal holiday.
For years, fans have desired to have the day off after Super Bowl Sunday, and although it would’ve been great to have “Super Bowl Monday” as an official holiday, this would be just as well.
“It shall be called the Super Bowl and will be a huge national event played deep into the night on Sunday when everyone must go into work on Monday.”

The change will have to be approved by the NFL Players Association before it can be made official. As for next season, Super Bowl LX will take place on February 8, 2026 at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California. The following year, however, Super Bowl LXI happens to already fall on the three-day President’s Day weekend, as it’s scheduled to take place on Valentine’s Day, February 14, 2027 at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California.
