Update:

After three and a half years, Brian Daboll has been fired as head coach of the New York Giants. A season that hinted at progress has taken an abrupt downturn and the decision to fire Daboll was announced on Monday.

The Giants have stumbled to a 2-8 record in 2025, mirroring the performance from the first ten games of the previous two seasons. Since the start of the 2023 season the Giants are a combined 11-33, a record that could not be allowed to continue.

However it was the manner of Sunday’s loss to the Chicago Bears that signaled that Daboll’s time was finally up. The experienced coach watch on as his team squandered a 20-10 lead in the final four minutes.

The Giants became only the second team since the NFL merger to lose after holding a double-digit lead with less than four minutes remaining. The only other team to do so were the 2004 Seattle Seahawks.

The manner of that defeat was a chastening one for the Giants to take, compounded by another injury to a key player. Rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart suffered a concussion in the third quarter and was unable to continue. He joins follow first-year Cam Skattebo on the injury list for the Giants.

In the short-term the Giants have announced Daboll’s assistant head coach - Mike Kafka - as the interim coach. Kafka has been in the frame for a number of head coaching roles in recent years but remained with the team. He will lead the Giants while the front office searches for a suitable replacement.
