The Steelers aiming to break a losing streak that dates back to 1965
The Steelers have played ten times in various Philadelphia stadiums since 1965 and have lost ten times.
The Pittsburgh Steelers can clinch a 2024-25 playoff berth this weekend. But to do so, they will have to do something they haven’t done since 1965 - beat the Eagles in Philadelphia.
During the past six decades, the Steelers have played 10 times in various Philadelphia stadiums and lost on each occasion. For the record, Mike Tomlin has been in Pittsburgh for 18 years and has failed to beat the Eagles in their three meetings at Lincoln Financial Field.
The mission in 2024 will be complicated because Nick Sirianni’s team has one of the best records in the NFC (11-2). In addition, the Steelers have suffered the loss of wide receiver George Pickens who is out with a hamstring injury.
On the positive side, oe of the players that gives hope to fans of the black and yellow franchise is Russell Wilson. The quarterback played six times against the Eagles when he was a member of the Seattle Seahawks and has never lost against them. His five victories were in the regular season and another in the Wild Card of the 2020 playoffs.
October 1965: the last time the Steelers beat the Eagles in Philadelphia
The 1965 season was one of the worst in Pittsburgh Steelers history. Mike Nixon’s team finished 2-12, but one of their two wins was the last time the Steelers beat the Eagles in Philadelphia.
Pittsburgh scored three times to win 20-14, but two of those scores came from the defense. The first came on a fumble recovery by Willie Daniel and 17 yards into the end zone. The second touchdown came on an interception by Jim Bradshaw; the defensive back ran 82 yards into the end zone to score points.
The only offensive TD was scored on a four-yard pass between Bill Nielsen and Mike Lind.
Later today at Lincoln Financial Field we will see if history repeats itself...
