Update:

Harry Kane has been one of the deadliest strikers in soccer over the past decade, becoming the all-time leading scorer for both Tottenham Hotspur and the England national team. Since joining Bayern Munich in 2023, he also became the fastest player to reach 100 goals for a club in one of Europe’s top five leagues, surpassing Cristiano Ronaldo and Erling Haaland.

How Tom Brady sparked Kane’s NFL dream

Excelling on the soccer field, however, doesn’t appear to be enough for Kane, who has often spoken about his desire to become an NFL kicker.

The 32-year-old’s passion for football dates back to a 2011 documentary about Tom Brady, which inspired him to support the New England Patriots. Kane even attended the Patriots’ Super Bowl win in Atlanta in 2019, where he met Brady and Julian Edelman, who he now considers friends.

While many athletes joke about trying another sport professionally, Kane’s NFL ambition is genuine. He believes the pressure he feels when taking penalty kicks in soccer is similar to what kickers experience on the football field.

“It’s something I definitely want to explore,” he said in a “Good Morning America” interview in 2023. “I know it will be a lot of hard work. I’m not expecting to just rock up and start kicking field goals. It would be a lot of practice.

Super Bowl champion offers to help Kane become NFL kicker

If Kane does make the move from goalscorer to field goal kicker, he already has support from a former Super Bowl champion who wants to help him achieve it.

Punter Dustin Colquitt, who won the Super Bowl with the Kansas City Chiefs in 2020, is a longtime soccer fan. In an interview with BBC Sport, he revealed that his childhood dream was to play in the Premier League and that he even received college scholarship offers for soccer rather than football.

Colquitt has been following Kane’s NFL journey closely and believes the England captain has what it takes to succeed.

“If he focused on it, he would do fantastic. I’ve seen some of his finishing skills,” Colquitt said. “I would love to actually work with him just because I love soccer and his excitement. He’s seeking this out; that’s part of the fiber of his being, that he wants to try this NFL thing.

“So when he’s ready, I’m ready.

What comes next for Kane

Kane’s contract with Bayern Munich runs until June 2027, just before he turns 34. The striker has said he would be open to extending his stay in Germany, but perhaps Colquitt will be getting a call once it becomes clear Kane’s soccer career is winding down.
