COWBOYS

The surprising reason the Dallas Cowboys (almost) never wear blue

The Cowboys’ colors are blue, silver, and white, and yet, it’s a rare sight to see a Dallas Cowboys player in a blue uniform.

The Dallas Cowboys have been wearing their white jerseys at home since they entered the league as an expansion team in the 1960s. General manager at the time, Tex Schramm, wanted to give the crowd a chance to see all the different colors each week, rather than blue vs white every single home game.

The other teams don’t always think that same way, and do wear their colored jerseys at home, leaving the Cowboys to wear white on the road most of the time as well. There is one time we are guaranteed to see the Cowboys wear blue, and that’s when they play the Washington Commanders on the road as they too prefer to wear white at home...at least when playing Dallas.

The curse of the blue jerseys

Although the “curse” of the blue jersey has faded over time, its effects still linger. It began in 1968 when the Cowboys lost to the Browns in the playoffs while wearing the blue, and then solidified in 1971 when the Cowboys lost to the Colts in Super Bowl V, also while wearing the blue jerseys. In 1972, however, they won Super Bowl VI while over the Dolphins while wearing white.

Then in 1981, the Cowboys lost the NFC Championship game to the Eagles while wearing - you guessed it - blue. It’s become such a legend that some teams (like Washington) purposely wear white when playing the Cowboys.

That curse is said to have officially been broken when the Cowboys won their first road playoff game in 30 years in the 2022-23 season against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, while wearing blue. The last time the Cowboys won a playoff game in blue before that was in the 1968 NFC Championship Game, when Roger Staubach led the Cowboys to a 28-0 victory over the Los Angeles Rams.

Their luck has indeed seemed to have changed with the blue jerseys as of the lasrt two-three seasons, but even still, it remains a rare sight to see the ‘Boys in blue.
