The team that holds the key to Aaron Rodgers' future

The four-time NFL MVP is yet to pick a landing spot for the 2025 season but has been linked with a number of teams.

Update:

Heading into the start of free agency the future of Aaron Rodgers was one of the biggest talking points. The four-time NFL MVP is the most high-profile of the players available as a free agent and there’s no shortage of interest but he’s yet to sign a new deal.

After officially being released by the New York Jets earlier this month the Pittsburgh Steelers and the New York Giants have emerged as two potential landing spots for Rodgers. However he is reportedly waiting to hear from another before making a decision.

The Minnesota Vikings are interested in Rodgers but are still considering their options for the 2025 season. The Athletic reports that Rodgers is “giving them time and waiting to hear from” the Vikings as he considers his future. This suggests that Minnesota is Rodgers' preferred destination and he looks willing to give them every chance to make an offer.

This opinion is not an outlier. On Friday, CBS Sports NFL Insider Jonathan Jones wrote: “If the Vikings wanted [Aaron] Rodgers, he would already be a Minnesota Viking.”

The Vikings allowed starting QB Sam Darnold to leave in free agency and they are tasked with a major rebuild. The Minnesota position is complicated by the fact that their two remaining quarterbacks - J. J. McCarthy and Brett Rypien - have never played a single regular season snap.

Should the Vikings risk signing a 41-year-old with such inexperienced players already in the roster? Doing so could leave them in a tough spot should Rodgers pick up an injury, as he has done in recent years. In 2023 he suffered a torn Achilles and played just one game and his advanced age makes a reoccurrence more likely.
