The Travis Etienne pronunciation revelation that broke NFL Twitter
The New Orleans Saints’ new running back has revealed the real pronunciation of his last name, and the internet is losing its mind.

Travis Etienne Jr. broke the internet today, when his explanation of how to properly pronounce his last name went viral on social media, sparking a wave of memes and confusion.
During a recent appearance following his move to the New Orleans Saints, Etienne revealed that the pronunciation many fans have used for years is not actually correct.
Instead of the commonly heard “Eh-tee-ENN,” Etienne explained that the name was originally pronounced closer to “A-chan.”

Wait… isn’t that De’Von Achane?
Almost immediately, NFL fans noticed something hilarious. That pronunciation sounds almost identical to the last name of De’Von Achane, the explosive running back for the Miami Dolphins.

Achane himself clarified earlier in his NFL career that his name should be pronounced “AY-chan,” not “A-chain.” So when Etienne mentioned his name was also supposed to sound like A-chan, the internet reacted instantly.
Memes comparing the two players flooded social media, with many fans posting the classic Spider-Man pointing meme to highlight the strange coincidence.

Why Etienne’s name sounds different
There’s actually a cultural reason behind the pronunciation. Etienne, who grew up in Louisiana, has Creole roots, which often give names a more French-influenced sound.

Over time, though, the pronunciation of his name became Americanized, especially during his college career at Clemson Tigers football, where coaches and broadcasters widely used the now-familiar “Etienne” pronunciation.
Etienne has even suggested that simplifying the pronunciation made things easier for people around him. Whether the pronunciation change sticks or not, NFL fans may never hear the name Travis Etienne quite the same way again.
