Update:

The Windy City came into this season not just hoping but expecting to see major improvements from last year to this year. It’s been a long time coming in Chicago, and it might get even longer if their franchise quarterback doesn’t fix his serious problem.

Perfect start, nightmare finish

With the first pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, the Chicago Bears selected Caleb Williams out of the University of Southern California. He was supposed to be the QB to solve the QB problems that have plagued the franchise for decades. His rookie year had it’s more downs than ups, but that was supposed to change this year.

That wasn’t exactly the case on Monday Night Football. The Bears made they debut against the Minnesota Vikings from Soldier Field, and everything started perfectly for Caleb Williams, literally. He completed each of his first 10 passes of the game, but things went south in a hurry.

The Bears took a 17-6 lead into the fourth quarter, but that’s when things took a tragic turn for Williams and Chicago. The Vikings scored three unanswered TDs to take a 27-17 lead as Caleb finished the game 11/25 after completing his first 10 throws.

Williams top of the list, but not in a good way

One of those incompletion came late in the game when the Bears needed two scored to have a chance to pull off a late miracle. With 2:30 left in the 4th quarter Williams had D.J. Moore wide open down the left sideline but he overthrew him and a chance to score a quick TD slipped through the Bears fingers.

The Bears would go on to score, but that overthrow wasted valuable time off the clock. Williams’ tendency to overthrow the ball has plagued him since he came into the league. Since the start of last year, he has 52 incompletions due to overthrows, which is 17 more than the Bo Nix of the Denver Broncos who has the second most.

Some of those may not be Williams fault, considering he was the most sacked player in the league, and third most in NFL history last season, but his decision making has been questioned at times. If he is going to lead the Bears to more wins this year, and reach his goal of completing 70% of his passes he can not afford to be missing passes like the one on Monday Night.
