These are the NFL games that could be impacted by the winter storm this weekend
The weather forecast doesn’t look good with just two of the six Wild Card round games to be played indoors.
A deadly winter storm, driven by a polar vortex, continues to wreak havoc across many US states as it heads east towards the mid-Atlantic. Several states issued emergency warnings at the weekend with Kansas, Arkansas, Kentucky and Virginia all impacted by heavy snow and ice.
The east coast feels the freeze
A total of 30 states were under weather alerts, with over 60 million people affected by the harsh weather conditions. Deep snow has caused travel disruptions with several airports including Kansas City International, St. Louis Lambert and Chicago O’Hare airport all reporting flight cancellations.
The outlook isn’t good for the weekend when the NFL Wild Card series begins with six games - only two of them to be played indoors.
Chargers vs Texans (NRG Stadium) and Vikings vs Rams (SoFi Stadium) will both be played undercover so won’t be affected but in the other four games, players will be will at the mercy of the elements.
The bleakest outlook is for New York where the Broncos and the Bills will be facing off at Highmark Stadium on Sunday afternoon. Sub-zero temperatures and gusts of up to 15 m/h are forecast with clear skies although snow is expected on the eve of the game.
At M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore, conditions won’t be much better when the Steelers and the Ravens take to the field on Saturday. Snow is forecast during the morning but skies will have cleared ahead of the 8 p.m. kickoff. Winds of 11 mph and a 10% chance of rain during the game, so anyone attending the game is advised to wrap up well.
Ice cold in Philly
The US National Weather Service has issued a special weather statement for Philadelphia with high winds forecast throughout the week although the situation will have calmed down by the time the Packers' matchup with the Eagles gets underway at 4:30 p.m. on Sunday. Expect temperatures at Lincoln Financial Field to be up to around 5 degrees - a mostly sunny and dry afternoon with light winds.
And finally, we head down to Florida, the sunshine state where the Buccaneers will be hosting the Commanders on Sunday night. A cold weather advisory has been issued in Tampa, where temperatures are expected to be hovering around 18 degrees C. Winds of 18 mph, 56% humidity and mostly cloudy at Raymond James Stadium when the action gets underway at 8 p.m.
