This is how Jalen Ramsey’s salary affects the Steelers’ salary cap. Is it a good decision athletically and financially?
The acquisition of Jalen Ramsey is undoubtedly a sound move in terms of strengthening the defense, but how will affect the salary cap?
Cornerback Jalen Ramsey is heading to Pittsburgh as part of a blockbuster deal that will see Minkah Fitzpatrick move in the opposite direction.
Ramsey will get a substantial pay rise as part of his new contract. He signed a three-year extension with the Dolphins last year, bumping his average salary up to $24.1 million. With the Steelers, he has been handed a $1.5 million raise which takes his compensation to $26.6 million.
Some commentators have questioned how the move might affect the Steelers’ salary cap. The most conservative estimations gauge that the franchise has an active cap of $298,612,663 with $18,622,645 of cap space. So it’s likely that we will see Pittsburgh make roster cuts or restructures player contracts to balance the books.
T.J. Watt negotiating a new deal
Until now, defender T.J. Watt was the highest earner on the roster but he is entering the final year of his contract and is holding out for a new deal. An agreement could be struck in the next few weeks. We’ll know more before the players return for training camp on July 23, but if signs an extension, it will likely involve a pay rise.
There will be some cap casualties. Jonathan Ward and Joshuah Bledsoe were released last month, Ryan Watts retired due to injury back in April and Preston Smith has moved on.
