Update:

The Kansas City Chiefs are gearing up for their attempt at a three-peat, with the Philadelphia Eagles standing in the way of their third straight Super Bowl victory. The two teams face off this Sunday at Caesars Superdome in New Orleans in Super Bowl LIX.

This being the last game of the season, it’s normal that some of the players would be a little banged up. Unfortunately for the Chiefs, their star quarterback Patrick Mahomes was not spared from injury this season.

Mahomes injury update ahead of Super Bowl LIX

Mahomes was injured just at the end of the regular season, when he suffered a high ankle sprain in Week 16 (December 17) against the Cleveland Browns. What’s fortunate is that the injury didn’t seem to affect him at all. He didn’t miss a game, and though he’s shown up on the injury report, he’s been a full participant in practices since the start of the postseason, aided by having a full week off in the first round.

And ahead of the big game, Chiefs head coach Andy Reid provided an encouraging update. On Wednesday, Reid confirmed that there are no injuries to report - the Chiefs are healthier than they’ve been all season.

While that’s obviously great news - here’s why Mahomes' previous injury could still be a problem. The Chiefs have struggled with pass protection all season. If Mahomes' injury flares up at all, this could be a big problem for the quarterback. Vic Fangio’s defense was the top-ranked in yards allowed and the second-best scoring defense. They forced a league-high 22 fumbles and in the postseason, they sacked opposing quarterbacks 11 times through three games.

Through the Chiefs' two postseason games, Mahomes completed 34 of 51 passes for 422 yards and two touchdowns, and added 57 rushing yards and two rushing touchdowns on top of that, so he’s done enough to get them this far. But the Eagles defense will take advantage where ever they can, so Mahomes' ankle is still going to be a concern until the final whistle.
