Todd Gurley fans have been told what they already knew in their heart of hearts. There will be no comeback.

Speaking to NFL Network’s Andrew Siciliano, the two-time All-Pro running back confirmed that, although he hasn’t officially retired, he has no plans to play football again.

Over the past week, Gurley has posted tweets, thanking current and former NFL stars for what they brought to the game, leading to speculation as to his motives. The 28-year-old self-professed “alpha male” said that there was no ulterior motive.

“I just wanted to show gratitude man, because there’s a lot of guys that’s on this earth and especially as alpha males, we don’t show the love like we’re supposed to. I just wanted to let those guys know that I appreciate them for everything that they’ve done for me, just at an inspirational level.”

Todd Gurley was a two-time All SEC player as a Georgia Bulldog, before being drafted in the first round of the 2015 NFL Draft by the St Louis Rams. His first season saw him rush for over 1000 yards and 10 touchdowns, winning the Offensive Rookie of the Year award.

Under Sean McVay, he really blossomed, leading the league in rushing in 2017 and 2018 and making All-Pro trips both years. Injury plagued him in the years following and he was traded to the Atlanta Falcons in 2020, carrying the ball only 195 times for 678 yards and nine touchdowns.

His response to the question from Siciliano was cryptic, when Gurley said, “I don’t think there’s any question about that one.” Siciliano posed the question again, asking if he was really done. Gurley left no doubt in his answer, saying, “Yeah, most definitely.”

Godspeed to you, Todd, in whatever you do next.
