Update:

The NFL coaching carrousel is a never ending ride that is likely to add a few passengers in the next few weeks. Black Monday is coming, but it’s going to have a bit of a different feel this year.

Black Monday looming

The end of the NFL season is a chance for those players on teams at the bottom of the barrel to take a break and disconnect, but front offices of those teams will be tasked with getting their rosters and coaching staffs ready for next season as soon as possible.

Black Monday is usually the Monday after the season ends in which struggling teams part ways with their coaches. A couple of the bottom teams in the league have already moved on from their coaches earlier in the season, so it’s unlikely we have a ton of coaching on the chopping block once this season comes to and end.

Two teams stand out heading into the final week of the season. One is the Tennessee Titans and the other is the New York Giants. Both of those teams let their coaches go in the middle of the year, and they will be looking for the next Ben Johnson or Liam Cohen who joined new teams last offseason and have led their teams the playoffs.

Titans, Giants looking

The Tennessee Titans were always going to have a tough time winning games this year. They had the No. 1 pick in the Draft last year which usually means they are a pretty bad team around the board. They drafted Cam Ward with the top pick but he has had a rough season and so has the rest of the team. That led to the Titans letting Bill Callahan go after the first six games of the season and they replaced him with Mike McCoy whose time as a head coach will likely come to an end at the end of the season.

The New York Giants had been flirting with the idea of letting Brian Daboll go for a while, and this season was the breaking point between the two parties. There was a moment of hope when Jaxson Dart and Cam Skatteboo injected some life in the Big Apple, but both of those rookies struggled with injuries and the results suffered as excitement quickly turned to disappointment. Daboll was fired after a 2-8 start to the season and Mike Kafka was appointed to the interim role. NY has yet to win a game with him at the helm, so the Giants will be hitting the head coaching market hard sooner rather than late.

Pete Carroll has has just one year to turn things around in Las Vegas, and they have gone from bad to worse this year. It would be awfully cruel to fire a coach after just a year, but it is Las Vegas and we are used to the being pretty quick triggered in the front offices. Johnathan Gannon should also be feeling his seat heating up in the desert, just like Mike McDaniels could be in South Beach.
