Trey Hendrickson set to end contract holdout: How much will he earn with the Bengals?
All-Pro pass rusher Hendrickson refused to report to Cincinnati Bengals training camp last week but could be ready to return.
After a prolonged contract dispute, the Cincinnati Bengals may finally be able to welcome Trey Hendrickson back to team practice.
The All-Pro pass rusher has been a notable contract holdout over the offseason, demanding a substantial increase on his current $15.8 million-per-year salary. As others in his position have received deals worth double that, Hendrickson has not been at training camp so far.
He was racking up fines of $50,000 per day as he continues his protest, but that looks set to end. ESPN reports that Hendrickson will return to train with the team on Wednesday. He has not yet signed a new deal but the two camps are reportedly close and his return would act as a gesture of good faith towards the team.
Without a contract change, Hendrickson is set to earn a base salary of $15.8 million in 2025. He is believed to be demanding a deal that puts him towards the top of the market for his position, likely doubling his base earnings.
Already this year there have been improved salaries for Maxx Crosby ($35.5 million), Danielle Hunter ($35.6 million), Myles Garrett ($40 million) and T.J. Watt ($41 million).
Hendrickson looks likely to join that group very soon. CBS Sport reports that the main sticking point now relates to guaranteed money. The Bengals would like to limit the contract to just one year of guaranteed money, while Watt and Garrett both have three years fully guaranteed.
It would be a major decision for a Bengals front office that rarely gives more that one year of guaranteed money. But there are few doubts about Hendrickson’s effectiveness given that he has recorded 35 sacks across the last two years, more than any other other player in the league.
