Tua Tagovailoa benched: What comes next for the Dolphins’ $212 million QB?
The Miami Dolphins’ decision to sit their franchise quarterback may say more about the direction of the team than just one bad night.

The Miami Dolphins’ decision to bench Tua Tagovailoa following Monday night’s loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers was more than just a reaction to that one game. Despite the optics, this move isn’t about panic. It’s about evaluation.

Tagovailoa is in the first year of a four-year, $212 million extension, a deal that once symbolized Miami’s full commitment to him as the long-term answer at quarterback. But with the Dolphins now eliminated from playoff contention, the calculus has changed.
Why the Dolphins benched Tagovailoa
On paper, Tagovailoa’s performance against Pittsburgh wasn’t disastrous. He completed 22 of 28 passes for 253 yards and two touchdowns. However, much of that production came after the game had already slipped away, and Miami’s offense once again struggled to generate explosive plays when it mattered most. More importantly, the bigger picture has been impossible to ignore.
Tagovailoa now leads the NFL in interceptions, and his decision-making has regressed in critical moments throughout the season. Miami’s offense, once built around timing and precision, has looked predictable and easier to disrupt against physical defenses.
With postseason hopes officially gone, the Dolphins opted to sit Tagovailoa and hand the offense to rookie Quinn Ewers, not because he’s the future, but because the Dolphins need to understand what they have behind their franchise quarterback.
Tua Tagovailoa’s 2025 Season at a Glance
- Completed 67.7% of his passes
- Threw for 2,660 yards
- Recorded 20 touchdown passes
- Led the NFL with 15 interceptions
- Posted a passer rating hovering in the mid-80s
- Miami finished 6–8 in his 14 starts and was eliminated from playoff contention in Week 15
What this means for Tua’s future
This benching does not mean the Dolphins are moving on from Tagovailoa in the immediate future. Financially and structurally, that simply isn’t realistic. His guaranteed money all but ensures he will be part of Miami’s plans next season.
The numbers game:

Tua Tagovailoa already has $54 million guaranteed to him in 2026.
On March 15, $3M of his 2027 salary becomes guaranteed.
Cutting him would leave $99M in dead money.
Post June 1 cut would equal $67.4M in dead money in 2026, $31.8M in 2027. https://t.co/DowBg5XZCR
But it does suggest something more subtle, and perhaps more concerning. The Dolphins are no longer treating Tagovailoa as untouchable. Instead of defaulting to continuity, they chose accountability. For the first time in his NFL career, Tagovailoa is facing legitimate internal pressure, not just external criticism.
Why Quinn Ewers?
Miami could have turned to a veteran option like Zach Wilson. Instead, they chose a seventh-round rookie with limited NFL experience. That decision suggests the Dolphins are more curious than desperate.
Ewers isn’t being asked to save the season. He’s just being asked to show whether he belongs in Miami’s quarterback room moving forward, and whether Tagovailoa truly has a wide enough margin for error to justify his contract. If Ewers struggles, the Dolphins lose nothing. If he shows flashes, it complicates future decisions.
The most important takeaway isn’t that Tua Tagovailoa was benched, but when he was benched. This came after elimination, not before. Tagovailoa’s future in Miami is still secure for now, but the unquestioned status he once enjoyed is no longer guaranteed. The remainder of the season, whether he returns to the lineup or not, will shape how the Dolphins approach the quarterback position in 2026 and beyond.
