Tua Tagovailoa reveals surprising preseason plan after injury-shortened year
Dolphins quarterback Tagovailoa says he wants preseason reps to build chemistry with new teammates ahead of pivotal 2025 campaign.

After missing six games last season, Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa is hoping to take the field before Week 1 this year — even if it’s just in the preseason.
The 26-year-old former Alabama standout, who appeared in just 11 games in 2024 due to injuries, told reporters Wednesday he’d like to suit up for some preseason snaps as the Dolphins gear up for a competitive run in the AFC East this season.

“I’ve always been a fan of Tua Tagovailoa’s practices, but he’s turned up the volume on his consistency. He’s steady every single day. You don’t see wasted throws. You… pic.twitter.com/LBJe22oa1K
Humble Tagovailoa “not too good” for preseason
It’s uncommon for established starters to play in preseason games, but Tagovailoa says it’s important to get on the same page with new teammates as early as possible.
“I’d definitely like to get a little time in during the preseason,” Tagovailoa said after Wednesday’s practice. “It’s a new year, a fresh start. You’ve got to build that chemistry with the guys. I don’t think I’m too good to play in preseason games, and I’m definitely not above the rest of this team.”
Dolphins’ preseason opponents
Miami’s preseason schedule features matchups against the Chicago Bears (August 10), Detroit Lions (August 16) and Jacksonville Jaguars (August 23). The Dolphins are also planning joint practices with each opponent before their respective games, meaning Tua could see action against the NFC North squads before potentially sitting out the preseason finale.
Tagovailoa finished last season with 2,867 passing yards, 19 touchdowns, and seven interceptions, leading Miami to a 6–5 record in games he started. Despite missing time, he topped the NFL in completion percentage, connecting on an impressive 72.9% of his throws.
Tagovailoa praises rookie QB Quinn Ewers
The Dolphins added depth at quarterback during the 2025 NFL Draft by selecting former Texas Longhorns star Quinn Ewers with the 231st overall pick in the seventh round.
So far, Tagovailoa likes what he’s seen from the rookie in training camp.
“He’s been at his best,” Tua said of Ewers, who’s competing for a backup role behind the Dolphins’ franchise QB.
