Vikings QB JJ McCarthy’s contract details: Salary and years left in Minnesota

The Minnesota Vikings and Chicago Bears begin the 2025 NFL regular season this evening, to conclude the opening weekend of action. It will be a momentous occasion for JJ McCarthy, who will be making his debut for the visitors - against the team he supported as a kid.

Last month Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell named McCarthy as the team’s starting quarterback and one of the captains. Minnesota parted ways with three quarterbacks during the offseason, including Sam Darnold, and decided not to pursue future Hall of Famer Aaron Rodgers. Instead, the franchise has put their faith firmly in McCarthy, the player they selected in the 2024 NFL draft.

McCarthy missed the 2024 season

The rookie quarterback ruptured the meniscus in his right knee during the Vikings’ first preseason game against the Las Vegas Raiders a year ago. He underwent surgery at the time and a second operation in November and was ruled out for the whole of the 2024 season.

The 22-year-old is back and ready to make his mark in what effectively will be his rookie season. He will become the fourth quarterback over the past 20 seasons to make his NFL debut on “Monday Night Football” in Week 1, ESPN Research notes.

JJ McCarthy’s contract details with the Vikings

In July 2024, McCarthy signed a four-year, contract worth $21,854,796 with the Vikings. The deal includes a $12,714,396 signing bonus, $21,854,796 guaranteed, and an average annual salary of $5,463,699.

In 2025, JJ will earn a base salary of $960,000 and a roster bonus of $828,400, while carrying a cap hit of $4,966,999 and a dead cap value of $9,535,797.
