Washington Commanders reveal stunning first look at new RFK Stadium replacement
The Washington Commanders have unveiled the first renderings of their new stadium that’s set for the former RFK Stadium site. Take a look!

The Washington Commanders took a major step toward redefining their future on Thursday, unveiling the first conceptual renderings of a new, state-of-the-art stadium planned for the former RFK Stadium site. Designed by global architecture firm HKS (the firm behind SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles and U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis), the project represents far more than a football venue. It’s envisioned as a year-round civic landmark that reconnects the franchise with Washington, D.C.’s historic core.
The roofed stadium, expected to seat 70,000-plus fans, is projected to be completed by 2030 and would anchor a broader mixed-use redevelopment along the Anacostia River. For a franchise long criticized for its outdated facilities and lack of local identity, the reveal marks a symbolic reset.

A stadium designed for Washington, not just football
According to team president Mark Clouse, the early visuals represent a “defining milestone” in the Commanders’ long-term vision. The design places heavy emphasis on honoring both the team’s past and the city’s architectural legacy, particularly the historic significance of RFK Stadium.
Rather than dominating the skyline, the stadium concept intentionally aligns with the L’Enfant Plan, preserving sightlines toward the U.S. Capitol and surrounding monuments. A transparent, sculpted domed roof allows natural light while maintaining a lower east–west profile, a deliberate nod to the city’s iconic landscape.

Inside and out, the emphasis is on openness. A continuous colonnade wraps the structure, blurring the line between public space and stadium interior and reinforcing its role as a gathering place rather than an isolated venue.
City leaders were quick to frame the project as an economic and cultural catalyst, not just a sports facility. Mayor Muriel Bowser highlighted the stadium’s potential to deliver jobs, business opportunities, and year-round events, while expanding public access to the waterfront. At least 30 percent of the site will be dedicated to active and passive recreation, including new green spaces, plazas, and pedestrian connections.
The goal is to link downtown Washington with the Anacostia River in a way RFK Stadium never fully achieved, transforming the area into a destination that’s active even on non-game days.
Construction is still several years away, and plenty of hurdles remain. But the unveiling of these renderings provides the clearest signal yet that the Commanders are serious about reestablishing themselves in the District with a venue that reflects both modern expectations and local identity. Season ticket members will receive priority access when tickets for the new stadium become available, with deposits for the 2026 season already open.
