Washington Commanders 32 vs 21 Philadelphia Eagles summary: stats and highlights | NFL Week 10
The ’72 Dolphins will be popping the champaign after the Washington Commanders handed the Philadelphia Eagles their first loss fo the season on Monday night. Washington turned the Eagles over four times in the 32-21 victory from Lincoln Financial Field.
Washington ate up the clock in first half
The Commanders had the perfect game plan to take down the Jalen Hurts and the Eagles offense. Washington was able to construct long, time consuming drives that let the clock drain while keeping Hurts on the sideline.
The Eagles had just over six minutes of possession in the first half, but managed to get into the end zone twice in that time. The defense forced a fumble on the Commanders opening drive of the game, and three plays later Hurts took a QB sneak into the end zone to take a quick 7-0 lead.
The Commanders took blow after blow and bounced back every time, starting with their next possession which was thirteen plays long and took 7:21 on the clock. Washington converted on three third downs on their opening scoring drive which was finished off with Antonio Gibson’s 1 yard TD run.
Commanders connect on 3rd down conversions
The Commanders started the game 10/13 on third down and that was a big reason why they were able to find success early in the game.
Hurts and the Eagles took the lead back on the next drive as a pass interference deep in Washington territory set up a 6 yard jump pass to Dallas Goedert to take a 14-7 lead.
Heinicke marched the Commanders down the field as he and Terry McLaurin continued to connect on another long drive that took 6:30 off the clock, but Philly was able to hold them to a field goal to keep their 14-10 advantage.
McLaruin had a monster day, going for 128 yards on 8 catches on a night where Heinicke had for 211 yards witih no TDs and one INT.
Hurts with first of four turnovers
The first of the four Eagles turnovers came midway through the second quarter when Hurts was picked by Darrick Forrest. The turnover led to the Commanders taking their first lead of the night with a seven minute drive that took the clock below the Two Minute Warning and Brian Robinson stretched into the end zone to put the Commanders up 17-14.
Joey Slye would stretch the lead out to 23-14 with a career high 58 yard field goal as the half came to a close and then a 32 yard field goal to start the scoring in the second half.
Fourth quarter fumbles kill Eagles comeback bid
Phlly was able to cut into the lead on the first play of the fourth quarter when Devonte Smith had an 11 yard catch and run to take it 23-21 heading into the final 15 minutes. The Eagles defense finally came up with a big play on the next drive, when C.J. Gardner-Johnson picked of a deep shot from Heinicke and Lincoln Financial Field finally came to life after the Commanders had kept them quite all night.
Philly had two crucial mistakes in the fourth quarter, but one of them should never have been allowed. With the Eagles deep in their own territory Dallas Goedert made a catch and started a run up field when he coughed up the ball, but the replay showed his face mask being grabbed, but the refs missed the call and the Commanders took over at the PHI 34 which would lead to a final Joey Slye field goal from 55 yards.
Still with in a touchdown, trailing 26-21 the Eagles hit a big play down the field on the next drive, but Quez Watkins fumbled after making a 51 yard catch and the ball was recovered by the Commanders with under six minutes in the game.
That would turn out to be the last chance the Eagles had to score as the Washington defense closed out the game late on.
The Commanders are now back in the thick of the playoff picture with Taylor Heinicke under center. They take on the Houston Texans next week as the Eagles look to pick themselves up against Indianapolis Colts.
After a questionable flag was thrown when Heinicke knelt and the Eagles were penalized on a late hit as Brandon Graham hit the QB while he was on the ground. That left just 10 seconds on the clock for the Eagles to try to get 90 yards on the final play of the game. Toohill made the recovery in the end zone and hit the griddy to celebrate handing the Eagles their first loss.
After a fumble from Goedert on a play where he had his face mask grabbed early in the fourt quarter, Watkins made this fantastic catch but couldn't hold on to the ball and Forest came up with the huge recovery with six minutes to go in the game.
Smith closed the gap on the Commanders with this 11 yard catch and run for the TD.
Right before the half the Commanders took the lead with this incredible effort from Brian Robinson.

Tonight's odds
According to Bet365.com the Eagles are an 11 points favortie with the Over/Under set at 43.
I know Philly is undefeated, but I think 11 points is a lot to give any team, especially on Monday Night. I think the Commanders keep it tight until late, so I'm taking Washington +11.
Heinicke magic in the tank?
Tyler Heinicke is not putting up jaw dropping stats. That’s never been his game. But what he does for the Commanders is give them a chance to win at the end of the game. He has 629 yards and five TDs with three INTs in the three games he has been under center. Ron Rivera’s side doesn’t need him to be great with the talented defense they have.
Hurts for MVP
Jalen Hurts came into this season much like the Eagles did. Off of the radar when it comes to potential contenders in the NFC. With Hurts’ meteoric rise, the Eagles have soared to historic heights. With Buffalo’s loss to the Vikings, Hurts should be the second favorite to win the MVP after Patrick Mahomes once Vegas comes out with the odds tomorrow. Hurts has passed for 2,042 yards, 12 TDs and just 2 INTs and rushed for another 326 yards with 6 rushing TDs.
Eagles flying high
With the win over the Texans, the Eagles because the 29th team to start the NFL season 8-0. Each of the 28 other 8-0 teams made the playoffs, 15 won their went tot he Super Bowl, and eight of those teams lifted the Lomabri Trophy at the end of the season. The Eagles’ best start to a season came in 2004 when Philly went 13-1, and would go on to win the Super Bowl.
Eagles back in their nest
The Eagles haven’t been home since the end of October, and return to Lincoln Financial for a second straight primetime game after last weeks win over the Texans. Jalen Hurts has become one of the favorites for the NFL MVP over the last few weeks and can make his case even stronger with an epic performance tonight on Monday Night Football.
Commanders in familiar territory
While Tyler Heinicke deserves a good deal of the credit for the Commanders recent success, the Commanders defense has been incredible over the last month. They have given up just 18 ppg over the last four games, and will have their work cut out tonight in Philly against one of the most balanced offenses in the league.
Commanders last week
The Vikings had just one loss going into last weeks game, but Washington was on a hot streak ever since the Tyler Heinicke took command under center. The Commanders were on a three game win streak, and gave Minnesota all they could handle last week. It took the Vikings all 60 minutes to beat Washington when Greg Joseph hit a 28 yard FG to take down the Commanders.
Eagles last week
The Eagles may have been playing the worst team in the league last week but it set up for the typical trap game that a good team can get tricked by. Philadelphia survived, and beat the Houston Texans comfortably on Thursday night when Jalen Hurts threw for 243 yards and two touchdowns to improve to 8-0 on the season.
We are live from Lincoln Financial
Hello everyone and welcome to Philadelphia where the Eagles will put their 8-0 record on the line against a desperate Washington team that is looking to straighten the ship after a bumpy first half of the season, but Tyler Heinicke came in and sparked a turnaround and a three game win streak. The Commanders had their three game streak broken against the one loss Vikings last week and now look to get back to .500.
