What did Bill Belichick’s son say about his father?

While he may still be out of the job, it’s clear that Bill Belichick’s family can see the lighter side of the situation facing the former New England Patriots coach.

That the legendary coach remains without a head coaching position is puzzling. On the other hand, closer inspection of the situation does offer valid reasons why that’s the case. Regardless, his son has now made him the butt of some jokes, and that in itself is worth a laugh.

Steve Belichick jokes at his father’s expense

Former New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick is back in the headlines and no, it’s not because he’s got himself a job. Quite the opposite in fact as his lack of employment was recently ridiculed. Who had a go at the 6-time Super Bowl winner? His son, Steve Belichick, who dryly laid into his father during a news conference on Wednesday. For the purpose of context, the younger Belichick is currently working as the defensive coordinator for the University of Washington and was speaking alongside head coach Jedd Fisch and offensive coordinator Brennan Carroll - the son of former Seattle Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll.

With both men having famous fathers, questions were always going to be asked about the differences between them, to which Carroll answered in good faith, declaring that he is his “mother’s son.” Belichick on the other hand, took a distinctly different approach, pointing to the obvious gap between him and his father: Employment. “We definitely have similarities. I got a job, he doesn’t. He knows that. I look up to my, dad he’s a mentor to me, but I’m myself and like [Carroll] said, excited to get out on the field and work with these guys and work with the kids and recruit kids. Just gonna be myself, I’m not gonna try to be him.”

Jokes aside, Bill Belichick remains one of the greatest coaches to ever manage a team. After 24 seasons as the Patriots’ tactician, Belichick and the franchise agreed to part ways. Though he was briefly linked with the Atlanta Falcons, with whom he had an interview, Belichick was not hired in the end, meaning for the first time since 1974 he was not among the NFL’s coaches. At this point, it will likely be 2025 before we see Belichick again. So, for the time being, his son Steve has got a point.
