COWBOYS
What did Cowboys QB Dak Prescott say about he and CeeDee Lamb’s miscommunication?
Dak Prescott and CeeDee Lamb look more disjointed than ever this season, and the two of them spoke on that after the Cowboys’ blowout loss to the Lions.
Something has been off between Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott and wide receiver CeeDee Lamb all season. During their brutal 47-9 beating by the Detroit Lions on Sunday, Prescott threw his second interception meant for Lamb in the last two games. In addition to that, there have been two games in which Lamb responded to Prescott’s mistakes by yelling at him and getting upset.
This is quite the change from the unstoppable duo of 2023 when Lamb had his best career season with 135 receptions for 1,749 yards and 14 touchdowns. Both were given mega contract extensions this season, with Prescott becoming the highest-paid player in NFL history and Lamb becoming the second highest-paid non-quarterback in the league. That has only added to the expectations for these two players, and thus exemplified the disappointment.
Prescott and Lamb speak on being out of sync
During the offseason, Prescott and Lamb were the talk of the town as both were waiting on their contract extensions. Lamb actually held out from the entirety of training camp, missing out on valuable practice time with Prescott. Clearly that had more of an effect than either of them expected.
The Cowboys are now heading into their bye week at 3-3 through the first six games. All three of those losses came at home and all three were blowouts. And all three displayed the clear disjointedness between Prescott and Lamb. In their loss to the Lions, Prescott targeted Lamb 14 times, but he caught just seven of those for 89 yards and with one of those targets ending up being the costly red zone interception.
When Prescott was asked about the miscommunication and lack of unity between he and Lamb, his answer, which he took his time getting to, did not provide a lot of room for hope.
“Just off the top of my head...” Prescott paused here for about five seconds.” It was a tough day in the sense that it wasn’t just about me and CeeDee. Sure, there was one throw here, a route here - he’ll tell you. Protection wasn’t great on one. If I had the answer, I promise you we’d be a lot better.”
Prescott also admitted that the interception meant for Lamb was partly due to his poor anticipation.
“Anticipated a little too much, a little too early,” said Prescott. “Guy made a great play, initially driving on the flat, he’s got the flat in man (coverage)...threw it early with the blitz. I was protected, however, let it hang a little bit, and the (defender) comes off off that, makes a great catch. You can’t turn the ball over in the red zone.”
Prescott and Lamb both spoke about utilizing this week’s bye week to really get back in sync with each other before facing a difficult challenge in the San Francisco 49ers in Week 8.
“The bye week most definitely will help,” said Lamb. “And things that we’ve missed on are very small things, and I know I say that every week or that we’ll be fine, but I know we will. Again, we just got to capitalize on the small mistakes. We’ve got to score. We’ve got to score touchdowns in the red zone. We’ve got to capitalize and continue moving the ball. I feel like there’s some good also, but there’s a lot more bad areas and we know we’ve got to fix that.”
While the Cowboys have a lot more problems to solve besides the Presott-Lamb connection this season, getting those two on the same page as soon as possible will have an effect on the entire rest of the offense. Plus it’s one positive the Cowboys should be able to count on while the defense works on their own issues stopping the run and the offense looks to get anything going on the ground.
Following the bye week, the Cowboys’ schedule doesn’t get any easier. They will face the San Francisco 49ers in Week 8 on Sunday, October 27th before moving on to the Atlanta Falcons and Philadelphia Eagles.
“The season doesn’t end in six weeks, I’ll say that,” Lamb said. “This bye week, we’ve got to use it to be better. We’ve got a lot Across the Halls, a lot of meetings, a lot of things we’ve got to clean up and, when we come back, we’re going to be ready to work.”
