Update:

Dallas Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy’s contract with the Dallas Cowboys officially came to an end on Tuesday, but he and the team parted ways mere hours before that. While McCarthy had three winning seasons in his five years in Dallas, he was unable to take them on a deep run in the playoffs, which is ultimately what he was hired to do.

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones may have considered keeping him on - he did have nothing but praise for McCarthy this season, despite their 7-10 record - but McCarthy was likely looking to earn more than whatever Jerry was willing to dish out. Before the two parted ways, Jerry alluded to paying his coach based on his success. After a losing season without a playoff appearance, that rate wasn’t likely to have increased from the previous seasons.

Prescott’s opinion on the McCarthy decision

While many Cowboys fans are sure to be happy about the decision to part ways with McCarthy, star quarterback Dak Prescott can’t say he feels the same. Prescott, who became the highest-paid player in NFL history this season after a four-year, $160 million extension, vouched for McCarthy earlier this season when questions about his future in Dallas came up again.

Clarence Hill of All City DLLS reported that Prescott, who was injured and out for the entire second half of the season, was unsurprisingly less than thrilled with the news that McCarthy would not be returning to Dallas for the 2025-26 season.

“[I’m] bummed because we built some things,” Prescott said. “But I guess they couldn’t reach an agreement... It’s the business. I look forward to the future plan.”
