What did NBC’s Mike Tirico say that angered Detroit Lions fans after win vs Kansas City Chiefs?

Following their massive win against the Chiefs, the Lions were diminished by a certain NBC analyst. It goes without saying that fans weren’t happy.

Update:

No matter how you want to package it, the Lions’ win over the defending Super Bowl champions in Week 1 of the 2023-24 NFL season was huge. Sure, you can raise arguments as to how and why it panned out, but as the saying goes: ‘You can only beat the team that’s in front of you.’

NBC’s Mike Tirico is not a fan favorite in Detroit

By now you’ve probably seen our report and many others on the monumental upset win that the Detroit Lions recorded against the Kansas City Chiefs. What you may not have seen, however, were the post-game comments made by NBC’s Mike Tirico, who appeared to minimize the weight of the victory that the Lions secured. Speaking about the contest, Tirico indicated that the result would have been different if a few missing stars were on the field for the Chiefs, namely defensive tackle Chris Jones, and star tight end Travis Kelce, both of whom are out due to a contractual dispute and knee injury respectively. “This has an asterisk because of no Chris Jones and no Travis Kelce,” Tirico said on “Thursday Night Football.” As you can imagine, those words were not well received by fans and many of them took to social media to make their feelings clear. Why is Mike Tirico wrong?

You don’t have to be a fan of the Detroit Lions to call Tirico out on this one. No. You simply have to be a fan of sports. As is the case with any sport, injury is part of the game and no individual or team can get around that fact. Call it an occupational hazard if you will. What’s the point here? The Detroit Lions, a team that didn’t make the playoffs last season after finishing with a 9-8 record, beat the defending Super Bowl champions, Kansas City Chiefs at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City in the season opener for both teams. That’s a big deal regardless of who was on the field. Keep an eye on the Lions because it just might be as their head coach Dan Campbell said after the win in his now famous locker room speech, “We’re built for this!”
