What did Patrick Mahomes say about his stats in the AFC Championship Game vs. the Bengals
The Chiefs quarterback suffered a severe ankle sprain in the first half of the Divisional Round game against Jacksonville, but it looks like he’ll be OK.
Chiefs nation froze in silence as they saw Patrick Mahomes limp off the field on Saturday Night after suffering a severe ankle injury in the first half of the Divisional Round game against the Jacksonville Jaguars. Mahomes has put Kansas City fans minds to rest in an interview after Wednesday’s practice.
Mahomes’ heroic return
Mahomes had his ankle rolled up on by a couple of Jaguar defenders late in the first quarter, and hobbled off the field as Arrowhead fell silent. Chad Henne took over for a possession, but the KC QB1 returned for the start of the second half visibly affected by his ankle.
The game was tied at 7-7 when he went off the field, but he came back to the game with a 17-10 lead after Henne lead the longest TD drive of the Chiefs season in the absence of the face of their franchise. The former Texas Tech Red Raider came back and didn’t just finish the game, he won He stretched the lead out to 27-17 with a TD pass to Marquez Valdes-Scantling midway through the final quarter.
Kansas City’s gunslinger was seen practicing on Wednesday afternoon, and reports said he looked good, he looked comfortable but the most comforting thing coming out of KC was what Mahomes told reporters after practice.
How mobile will he be on Sunday?
“It’s doing good,’’ he said. “I’ve done a few days of treatment, a few days of rehab. Excited to get on the practice field and kind of test it out and see where I’m at. But it’s feeling good so far.”
Once Mahomes returned in the second half of the Jags game, he didn’t throw a single pass outside of the pocket which is usually his specialty. He may be okay to play, but might have to adjust his style of play on Sunday against the Cincinnati Bengals.
“I’ll have to find ways to be able to push off and be able to still make the throws the right way,’’ he said. “I’ll push it a little bit today and then the next day and then the next day again and see what I can do then. Not reaggravate the injury, obviously, but push it to see what I’ll be able to do on Sunday.’’
