What did the Chargers’ Joey Bosa say about the calls in his team’s loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars?
The Chargers defensive end was not in a diplomatic mood, following his team’s Wild Card Round loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars, but one can sympathize given the circumstances. Yet, the question remains as to whether he has a point.
The Los Angeles Chargers completely collapsed against the Jacksonville Jaguars on Saturday, blowing a 27-0 lead to lose, 31-30, in the wild-card round. The historic loss resulted in some visible emotions from the Chargers, none It’s easy to understand, that if you blow such a sizeable lead, you’re also going to blow a fuse. On the other hand, blaming the officials for your loss is always a slippery slope to traverse.
The Chargers collapsed against the Jaguars
The simplest way to say this, is that the Los Angeles Chargers absolutely fell apart against the Jacksonville Jaguars on Saturday night. If ever there was an example of how to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory it would have to be the way in which Los Angeles gave up a 27-0 lead to end up losing 31-30 in their Wild-Card Round game. While there were a number of complaints throughout, the central point of contention seemed to be a missed false start on the Jaguar’s touchdown which brought the score to 30-26. At that point, defensive end Joey Bosa approached the sideline and threw his helmet which in turn resulted in a second unsportsmanlike penalty. Jacksonville then put paid to the situation by attempting a two-point conversion which they duly completed courtesy of a Trevor Lawrence scramble. Livid, wouldn’t quite cut it as a description for what we saw next from a number of players, especially Bosa.
What did Joey Bossa say about the officials?
Following the catastrophic loss, Bossa completely lost his cool, although some might argue rightly so. None the less, he definitely had a go at the officials as you can you see in his statement to ESPN:
“I’m sick of those f---ing people. I’m sure I have some fines coming my way already,” Bosa said initially, before launching into a rage. “I do really, really want to say some things. I need to be more accountable for my actions, obviously, but it’s a heated game and I’m hurting out there, I’m playing on half a leg, I’m getting dragged to the ground, whatever, could hurt me along with screwing our team, and yeah, maybe some of ‘em weren’t as blatant as I thought, but I don’t know. I think there just needs to be more accountability. I mean, if I say something to them I get a $40,000 fine, but if they blow a call that ruins an entire team’s season, they get to - they’ll probably be back in the locker room after the game like, ‘Haha, got that a--hole, oh yeah, got him. 15 yards what a loser.’”
Joey Bosa & The Two Sides of a Coin
It’s a story as old as time, in any sport that exists. When the stakes are high, so too are emotions and when a call doesn’t go a player’s way, most tend to lose control. Yet, there’s another side of the coin and again, in any sport that exists. That’s the side sees you taught to avoid putting yourself or your team in a position where an official’s decision can be so devastating. To his credit, Bosa conceded the point following his team’s loss. “We lost because we f---g blew it in the second half. Pretty simple.” Ultimately, the Jaguars will now advance to the Divisional Round of the playoffs for the first time since 2017, where they will face the Kansas City Chiefs on Saturday. Meanwhile, the Chargers will head home to reflect on what could have been.
