Less than three seasons after the Las Vegas Raiders acquired wide receiver Davante Adams from the Green Bay Packers, they’re trading him away again to the New York Jets. When they originally brought Adams onto the team in 2022, it was with the hope that he’d become the Raiders’ WR1 when reunited with college teammate quarterback Derek Carr. That worked out well for one season, but Carr moved on to play for the New Orleans Saints the next season.

Adams still played well the following season even without Carr under center, but they struggled to get things going at the start of this season. Not long into the start of the 2024 season, Adams told the team that he’d like to be traded before Week 5. He named the Jets as his top pick and now, he got his wish, being reunited with former Packers teammate quarterback Aaron Rodgers in New York.

The Raiders’ compensation from the Jets in exchange for Davante Adams

The Jets will acquire Adams from the Raiders in exchange for a third-round conditional draft pick. That pick could become a second-round pick depending on whether or not Adams reaches certain performance-based markers: 1. Adams is a first- or second-team AP All-Pro, or 2. Adams is on the active roster for the AFC Championship game or Super Bowl.

In 2022, Adams signed a five-year, $141.25 million contract, becoming the highest-paid wide receiver in the league at the time. The Jets will cover the entirety of the nearly $72.5 million left on that contract, which runs through the 2026 season.

It made sense for the Raiders, who are likely out of the playoffs anyway, to take advantage of the seller’s market for receivers and trade the 32-year-old. Now, they’re more likely to be able to move up in the 2025 draft and look for a new quarterback to replace their current disappointing duo of Gardner Minshew and Aidan O’Connell. They’ll also free up $28.4 million in cap space for the 2025 NFL offseason by handing his contract over to the Jets.
