What happens next after Rickea Jackson’s protective order filing against James Pearce Jr.?
Atlanta Falcons edge rusher James Pearce Jr. is facing several felony charges after his ex-girlfriend told the court she feared for her life.

The legal battle involving Rickea Jackson and James Pearce Jr. is far from over. After the Los Angeles Sparks forward filed a petition for protection against her former boyfriend, a Florida court granted a temporary injunction while the case moves toward a key hearing scheduled for April 21.
The filing came after Pearce, an edge rusher for the Atlanta Falcons, was arrested on multiple felony charges stemming from a Feb. 7 incident in which he allegedly rammed Jackson’s vehicle and fled police. But the temporary protective order is only the first step in what could become a lengthy legal process.

What the temporary protective order means
By granting the initial injunction request, the court has ordered Pearce to avoid contact with Jackson and remain a specified distance from her home, workplace and vehicle.
Temporary orders like this are typically issued when a judge believes there may be an immediate safety concern. They remain in place until a full hearing can be held where both sides can present evidence. At the April hearing, a judge will determine whether the order should become permanent.
If the court grants a permanent injunction, the restrictions could last for months or even years, depending on the judge’s ruling.
The criminal case moving in parallel
Separate from the protective order request, Pearce faces several criminal charges tied to the alleged incident, including aggravated battery with a deadly weapon and aggravated stalking.
Prosecutors would need to prove those charges in court, and a conviction could carry significant legal consequences. Jackson has already indicated in court filings that she is willing to testify in the criminal proceedings.
WNBA player Rickea Jackson's attorneys filed a court notice Tuesday in Miami-Dade (Florida) County saying that she is "willing to testify" against Atlanta Falcons player James Pearce Jr. if the domestic violence charges against him go to trial, according to a document.

Potential implications in the NFL
Because Pearce plays in the NFL, the case could also attract scrutiny under the league’s personal conduct policy.
The NFL has the authority to place players on the commissioner’s exempt list or issue discipline even before legal proceedings conclude. For now, neither the Falcons nor the league has publicly commented on potential disciplinary action.
Jackson’s petition describes a pattern of alleged harassment and threats leading up to the February incident, including claims that Pearce followed her, repeatedly contacted her and appeared outside her home. She said that she was in “fear of her life” and concerned that James might actually kill her.
Pearce has not publicly responded to the allegations in detail, and the case will ultimately hinge on the evidence presented in court.
With the protective order hearing still weeks away and the criminal case ongoing, the situation remains unresolved, and both athletes’ futures could be affected by what happens next.
