The Cleveland Browns faced a significant setback during their Week 7 clash against the Cincinnati Bengals, as they lost their starting quarterback, Deshaun Watson, who suffered what appeared to be a serious injury.

The injury occurred in the second quarter of the game from the Cincinnati 21-yard line. Watson, attempting to scramble for yardage, planted his right leg to brace for a burst of speed when something appeared to go wrong. As he pushed off, a visible wobble occurred, and Watson crashed to the ground in pain. Medical personnel attended to him on the field, and the quarterback was soon taken off, leaving teammates and fans concerned about the severity of the injury.

What injury does Deshaun Watson have?

The Browns will have to move forward without Watson for the rest of the season. Early reports suggest he may have suffered a ruptured Achilles tendon in his right leg—a significant injury that often requires surgery and a lengthy rehabilitation process. The player will presumably undergo tests with the Browns to officially determine the extent of the issue.

This injury is particularly heartbreaking as Watson was playing one of his best games of the season, having completed 15 of 17 passes for 128 yards prior to the incident.

Before the game, Watson had compiled 1,020 passing yards on 122 completions from 199 attempts, with five touchdown passes and three interceptions. He also contributed on the ground with 148 rushing yards and one touchdown on 29 carries, demonstrating his versatility as both a passer and a runner. His performance was seen as gradually improving, making the injury a significant blow to the Browns' aspirations this season.

In the wake of Watson‘s departure, rookie Dorian Thompson-Robinson took over as the starting quarterback. Despite the difficult circumstances, Thompson-Robinson led the Browns on a successful drive, capped by a Nick Chubb touchdown. While Thompson-Robinson will now bear the responsibility of guiding the Browns’ offense, the team also has Jameis Winston available as their third-string quarterback, though he can only be activated in the event of another injury to Thompson-Robinson.
