What is Brandon Allen’s NFL career record? QB to start for 49ers instead of injured Brock Purdy
Purdy is set to miss an NFL game for the first time, with Allen announced as his replacement against the Green Bay Packers.
The San Francisco 49ers will be forced to field Brandon Allen as their starting quarterback against the Green Bay Packers on Sunday (November 24) after first pick Brock Purdy was ruled out of the game.
Why isn’t Brock Purdy playing for the 49ers against the Packers?
Purdy, the star of the team’s run to Super Bowl LVIII, will miss an NFL game for the very first time due to shoulder soreness.
“It’s really up in the air for next week, so we’ll have to see on Monday,” was Niners head coach Kyle Shanahan’s response when asked whether Purdy will return for the Week 13 game against the Bills on December 2.
As a result of his absence, Allen has been announced as the starting quarterback for Sunday’s game at Lambeau Field (kick off at 4:25 p.m ET).
Brandon Allen set for rare NFL start
32-year-old Allen has made only 16 appearances and nine NFL starts since first featuring for the Denver Broncos in the 2019 season. This will be his first start for the 49ers, with his last in the league coming all the way back in Week 18 of the 2021 season for the Cincinnati Bengals.
“I think Brandon’s a really good thrower, runs our offense well, has done a really good job since he’s been here,” Shanahan told the media before the game. “He’s been here two years now, and guys believe in him and think he’ll give us a good chance to win.”
Allen will be keen to improve his record as a starter, which doesn’t make for great reading. The quarterback is 2-7 from his nine starts, with his sole victories coming in Week 9 of the 2019 season for the Broncos against the Cleveland Browns, and Week 16 of the 2020 season for the Bengals over the Houston Texans.
Going into Week 12, the Niners are fourth in NFC West after a 5-5 start to the season and their form will have to pick up if they are to be involved in the postseason for a fourth year in succession.
