What is Chiefs head coach Andy Reid’s record against the 49ers?
Considered one of the best in the business, the Chiefs head coach has quite a record, but what is his tally against the team he will face in the Super Bowl?
Super Bowl LVIII will not only give us a rematch of the 2020 edition, but we will also witness a clash between the proverbial master and student, which is to say the Chiefs’ Andy Reid will be hoping to show his former assistant and present 49ers head coach, Kyle Shanahan, that he still has much to learn.
A few things to know about Andy Reid
Before we get to the meat of the matter, it’s worth noting that the Kansas City Chiefs head coach, Andy Reid, is one of just six men in NFL history to have defeated all 32 teams in the league. Bill Belichick, Bill Parcells, John Fox, Tony Dungy, and Mike Shananahn are the others to have done the same. His present record stands at stands at 258-144 which is good enough to see him sit just behind former New England Patriots coach, Bill Belichick, at fourth on the list of the league’s winningest coaches.
This of course brings us to his record against his former charge and current coach of the San Francisco 49ers, Kyle Shanahan. Clearly at different stages in their careers i.e., Reid is looking to win a second consecutive Super Bowl title, while Shanahan is hoping to secure his first. That’s without mentioning the fact that it was Reid who got the better of Shanahan four years ago when the teams met in Super Bowl LIV. To that end, the sixth-year coach is going to have to make his men bring their A-game if he hopes to get the better of a 25-year veteran of the game. If you’re wondering, when it comes to the head-to-head between the two men, it stands at 3-0 in Reid’s favor.
OK, but what’s Andy Reid’s overall record vs the 49ers?
With 25 years under his belt, one can imagine that Reid has seen quite a few encounters in the NFL, and as we mentioned before he is one of a select few who has beaten every other team. Where his opponent in the coming Super Bowl is concerned, we can say that the veteran coach has definitely got the upper hand. Indeed, Reid’s overall record against the Niners stands at 9-4, meaning it’s safe to say the 65-year-old is in the driver’s seat, though we’re sure he will be taking nothing for granted when the league’s biggest game kicks off this Sunday. As for the most recent meeting between the teams, that would be last season when the Chiefs secured a 44-23 win on the road in Week 7. On that day, quarterback Patrick Mahomes stamped his authority on the game, as he completed 25 of 34 passes for 423 yards, three touchdowns, and an interception. Of course, we’re well aware that the past is the past, but one does get the feeling that the present could well be affected by it this Sunday. Kickoff is set for 6:30 p.m. ET. Don’t miss it!
