The NFL’s annual Thanksgiving Day slate has become one of the league’s biggest television showcases. With the whole nation looking for entertainment, this year’s matchup between the Kansas City Chiefs and Dallas Cowboys at AT&T Stadium is expected to challenge U.S. viewership records.

Thanksgiving games have been a league tradition since 1934, with the Detroit Lions hosting annually since 1936 - except during World War II - and the Dallas Cowboys joining the holiday lineup in 1966.

Cowboys’ dominate at Thanksgiving

Dallas will make its 58th Thanksgiving appearance, while the Chiefs return to the holiday stage for the first time in 19 years, marking their debut in the Patrick Mahomes era.

The Cowboys account for 13 of the 15 most-watched Thanksgiving Day broadcasts, aided by their national popularity and a kickoff time that coincides with traditional family gatherings. The 2022 Cowboys–Giants game at AT&T Stadium remains the holiday’s most-watched matchup, drawing an average of 42.06 million viewers.

Dallas in Thanksgiving Day games
Number of appearances: 57 (this year is number 58)
Overall record: 34-22-1
Record against divisional rivals: 16-4
Record in last 10 games: 5-5

Both teams enter Thanksgiving motivated after unlikely Week 12 comebacks. The Kansas City Chiefs rallied past the Indianapolis Colts to keep their playoff hopes alive and sit third in the AFC West at 6–5. Oddsmakers list Kansas City as the favorite against Dallas.

The Cowboys also arrive with momentum after erasing a 21–0 deficit to beat the Philadelphia Eagles 24–21. Dallas holds second place in the NFC East with a 5–5–1 record.
