What is the UFL 4-point field goal? Matt McCrane makes history with 60-yard kick

The UFL introduced a new scoring rule for field goals and one kicker already made history, putting the new rule into effect for the first time.

Update:

The United Football League wanted more excitement in 2026l, and it didn’t take long to get it.

DC Defenders kicker Matt McCrane made history this weekend by drilling a 60-yard field goal, the first under the league’s brand-new rule that awards four points for kicks from 60+ yards.

The moment immediately sparked curiosity across football fans. Wait, since when is a field goal worth four points? And why is football being played in March?

Here’s what’s going on.

What is the UFL’s 4-point field goal rule?

For the 2026 season, the UFL introduced one of the most unique scoring changes in modern football:

  • Field goals under 60 yards = 3 points (normal)
  • Field goals 60+ yards = 4 points

The idea is to reward difficulty and encourage more long-range attempts. McCrane’s 60-yarder instantly validated the league’s push to create more high-impact plays.

Why the UFL is experimenting with rules like this

Unlike the NFL, the UFL has leaned heavily into innovation. League officials have made it clear the goal isn’t gimmicks, but rather more action and tougher decisions. The 4-point kick creates fascinating strategy scenarios, like whether a team might intentionally lose a couple yards just to reach that 60-yard threshold.

And it doesn’t stop there. Other 2026 rule changes include:

  • No punting once a team crosses midfield (in most situations)
  • College-style one-foot catches
  • A ban on the “tush push”
  • Multiple extra point options worth up to three points

Put it all together, and the league is clearly trying to create a faster, higher-scoring version of football.

Why is the UFL playing in March?

If the timing feels unusual, that’s because it is, by design. The UFL is a spring football league, meaning its season runs during the NFL offseason. Starting in March allows the league to avoid competing directly with the National Football League, give football fans a year-round product, and provide opportunities for players outside the NFL spotlight

It’s part of an effort to carve out a consistent place on the sports calendar, something previous spring leagues struggled to do long-term.

Who is Matt McCrane?

McCrane may not be a household name (yet), but he’s no stranger to big kicks. The journeyman kicker has spent time around the NFL and spring leagues, building a reputation for having serious leg strength, which made him a perfect candidate to make history under the new rule.

By connecting from 60 yards, he became the first player to prove the concept works in a real game.

Is this the future of football?

It’s too early to say whether the 4-point field goal will catch on in the NFL too, but the early reaction is exactly what the league hoped for, sparking curiosity, debate, and attention. And if kicks like McCrane’s keep happening, it could become a defining feature of spring football.
