In the thrilling Week 6 game between the Buffalo Bills and the Kansas City Chiefs, Harrison Butker successfully launched a 62-yarder in the last few seconds of the first half to tie the game at 10-10. The Chiefs eventually lost, 24-20, but Butker’s kick did set a franchise record.

The distance of 62 yards is also the fourth longest for field goals, and the Chiefs’ kicker now joins the list of four other people who have achieved the feat. It is also four yards shy of the league record, which was set just a year ago.

The longest successful field goal in an NFL game was made by the Baltimore Ravens’ Justin Tucker, on September 26, 2021.

Justin Tucker is the field goal king of the NFL

In week 3 of the 2021 season game against the Lions, star quarterback Lamar Jackson threw a 36-yard pass to Sammy Watkins getting the Ravens across midfield. At the 48-yard line, with only a few seconds left, Tucker and his right foot went on to make history. With a powerful 66-yard field goal, Tucker lifted the Ravens with a 19-17 win over the Lions and engraved his name in the NFL record books. But whose record did he beat?

Whose NFL Field goal record did Justin Tucker break?

Prior to All-Pro Tucker’s now legendary field goal, it was Matt Prater’s 64-yard kick for the Denver’s Broncos against San Francisco on December 8th, 2013. It only took seven years and seven months for Tucker and the Ravens to move Prater’s record, but it certainly was not the first time Tucker tried to go for it. Eight seasons before, Tucker crushed a 61-yard field goal making him a legend in Detroit.

The longest field goal attempt in NFL history?

Before Prater set the record for the longest field goal, there was an attempt by Sebastian Janikowski that would have raised the NFL bar to a whole other level. The Oakland Raiders’ placekicker went for a 76-yard field goal kick against the San Diego Chargers on September 28, 2008. That kick though, into the wind, no less, came up well short, not even making the end zone.

What is the NFL record for field goals in a game?

Going backwards one year, in October, 2007, we witnessed the NFL record for field goals in one game by the Tennessee Titans. Rob Bironas made history for the Titans as he successfully kicked eight field goals against the Houston Texans, leading them to a 38-36 victory.

NFL kickers have just become more accurate than ever before, and the possibilities of the kicking record growing even more is endless. But seeing how long it took an NFL player to break a 2013 field goal record, we know it will take some real kicking talent, time, and coaching magic to make that happen any time soon.
