Update:

The Philadelphia Eagles have gone 4-2 to begin their NFL championship defense but it would be wrong to say that everything’s sunny in Philadelphia.

The Eagles have looked shaky in recent outings, suffering back-to-back defeats to the Denver Broncos and the New York Giants, and questions are being asked of the team’s struggling offense.

“Last year, do you think we were predictable? Everybody knew we were going to the run the ball. We still got it off,” Saquon Barkley said after Thursday’s loss. “I also think we got to get back to the attitude, the mindset of, not really giving a f--k what people are trying to do.”

Barkley came into the new season with sky-high expectations after an MVP-caliber 2024 campaign but he is yet to really find form. Barkley’s production has dipped significantly and the Eagles look a much less fluid team in offense.

From the start Barkley’s touches have been limited and has had just one game this season with 20 or more carries. After a stellar 2024 campaign opposition teams are now focusing their defensive play on negating Barkley and the Eagles haven’t yet found a way to ensure that the superstar remains in the game.

With Thursday night’s loss to the Giants, Philadelphia have now been held under 100 rushing yards as a team in four straight games. They have not been helped by a spate of injuries with guard Landon Dickerson one of a number of missing linesmen. This has crowded the field and given Jalen Hurts less time and space to make plays, forcing more turnovers than we saw in 2024.

Of course, it’s not all doom and gloom. Barkley still brings power and versatility when given space and he remains an elite player in the league. They was always likely to be a degree of decline at the start of 2025 and Nick Sirianni has shown that he knows how to get the best out of an offense. But Philadelphia fans will be hoping to see notable improvement in the coming weeks to get their season back on track.
