After reaching the NFC Championship Game for only the second time in nearly 15 years, the Philadelphia Eagles must now beat an on-fire San Francisco 49ers if they’re to seal a fourth Super Bowl appearance in franchise history.

Eagles soar past Giants to set up 49ers clash

The top-seeded Eagles, who won the NFC East division with a 14-3 regular-season record, booked their place in Sunday’s conference decider with an emphatic 38-7 victory over the New York Giants in the Divisional Round at the weekend.

Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts threw two touchdown passes and ran for a score at Lincoln Financial Field, as Nick Sirianni’s men blew New York away with a display that saw the hosts go in for half time 28-0 ahead.

Having brutally dispatched the Giants, Philadelphia face a 49ers team that has won its last 12 NFL games. San Francisco haven’t been beaten since going down to the Kansas City Chiefs in Week 7 at the end of October.

Kyle Shanahan’s second seeds, who topped the NFC West with a 13-4 record in the regular season, stamped their ticket to the NFC Championship Game with a 19-12 triumph over the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday.

Bengals or Chiefs await in Super Bowl

The winners of the 49ers vs the Eagles will take on either the Cincinnati Bengals or the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl LVII, which is to be held at State Farm Arena in Glendale, Arizona, on 12 February.

After beating the Buffalo Bills and the Jacksonville Jaguars, respectively, the Bengals meet the Chiefs in Sunday’s AFC Championship Game - the second season in a row that the franchises have faced off for the American Football Conference crown.

49ers are NFC Championship regulars; the Eagles, less so

This weekend’s NFC Championship in Philadelphia will be the 49ers’ third appearance in the fixture in four years. The Eagles, on the other hand, haven’t had a shot at winning the conference since 2017 - a season in which the Pennsylvanians went on to clinch their only Super Bowl title to date.

Vikings vanquished in Eagles’ last NFC title clash

After going 13-3 in the 2017 regular season to head into the playoffs as the NFC’s top seed, the Eagles saw off the Atlanta Falcons in the Divisional Round, setting up a conference showdown with the Minnesota Vikings.

And, as against the Giants four days ago, Philadelphia swept to a 38-7 win at Lincoln Financial Field. Quarterback Nick Foles threw three touchdowns in the rout, before the Eagles beat the New England Patriots 41-33 in Super Bowl LII in Minneapolis.

Prior to their thumping victory over the Vikings five years ago, the Eagles hadn’t contested the NFC Championship Game since losing to the Arizona Cardinals in 2008. In all, the team has now qualified for the event eight times.
