Which cities will have a team in the 2023 XFL season?
The XFL minor football league has announced the eight US cities that will have franchises in 2023, with the state of Texas home to no fewer than three.
The XFL has announced the eight cities that will host teams in the 2023 season of the minor football league, which is owned by Hollywood star Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson. The league has also confirmed some of the stadiums at which games will be played.
Trio of XFL teams in the Lone Star State
Texas will have three teams, based in San Antonio, Arlington and Houston. Hines Ward, a former wide receiver for NFL franchise the Pittsburgh Steelers, will take charge in San Antonio, with home games played at the Alamodome. In Arlington, whose franchise will be based at Choctaw Stadium, the head coach will be Bob Stoops, while Wade Phillips will be at the helm of a Houston team whose home games will be held at TDECU Stadium.
Washington, DC, the United States’ capital city, will have one of the eight franchises in the XFL. Its team will play at Audi Field, where Reggie Barlow will serve as head coach. Barlow has experience leading college football teams, having overseen Alabama State from 2007 to 2014 and Virginia State from 2016 to 2021.
There will also be a franchise in Las Vegas, with legendary former NFL safety Rod Woodson as head coach. The team’s home stadium is yet to be confirmed.
Anthony Becht, who spent a year as a player for the St Louis Rams in the NFL, will be the head coach of the Missouri city’s team, the BattleHawks. St Louis will be based at the Dome at America’s Center.
Terrell Buckley, a Super Bowl XXXVI winner with the New England Patriots, will head up an Orlando team, with home games held at Camping World Stadium, and a Seattle XFL franchise will be led by the experienced coach Jim Haslett. The team will share Lumen Field with NFL franchise the Seattle Seahawks.
When does the 2023 XFL season start?
The first season of the XFL under the management of ‘The Rock’ is scheduled to begin on 18 February 2023.
