In an unexpected twist in the playoff narrative, Green Bay upset the Cowboys, making the seven-seed Packers the lowest remaining seed in the NFC. As a result, they are now set to face San Francisco. This surprising turn of events means that the Buccaneers will now play against Detroit, setting the stage for their second-ever playoff encounter with the Lions.

Interestingly, this upcoming clash with the Lions has historical significance, as it harks back to the Wild Card round in 1997 when the Buccaneers won, breaking a 14-year playoff drought. Adding another layer of intrigue, this impending matchup is a rematch from their week six encounter this season, when the Lions won 20-6.

Reflecting on the previous meeting with the Lions in week six, the Buccaneers faced challenges on the offensive front, managing only two field goals. Baker Mayfield’s atypical performance was devoid of touchdowns and marked by an interception. With hindsight, the Buccaneers can analyze and strategize against the Lions again, leveraging lessons learned from the past.

The Lions’ offense has developed immensely since their week six triumph. Finishing the season with an impressive offensive record, ranking third in yards, fifth in points, and displaying a potent passing attack, the Lions boast a star-studded lineup. Jared Goff’s formidable season, connecting with Amon-Ra St. Brown for 12 catches and 124 yards in the previous encounter, underscores the offensive prowess of the Lions.

Notably, the Lions’ rookie tandem of Jahmyr Gibbs and Sam LaPorta has added firepower to their arsenal, contributing to an offense that ranks among the best in the league. The offensive line’s Pro Bowl-caliber performance, featuring Penny Sewell and Frank Ragnow, further firms the Lions’ offensive strength.

On the defensive side, the Lions face challenges, ranking 19th in yards, 23rd in points, and 27th against the pass. However, standout performers like Aiden Hutchinson, with an impressive 11.5 sacks, and rookie safety Brian Branch made waves in the slot with three interceptions.
