Now in his 25th season as an NFL head coach, Kansas City Chiefs supremo Andy Reid once again has the chance to join a select club of multiple Super Bowl-winning bosses, increasing his already astounding numbers in the sport.

Can the Chiefs’ chief join historic Super Bowl quartet?

When the Chiefs overcame the Philadelphia Eagles 38-35 in a thrilling Super Bowl LVII a year ago, Reid became only the 14th head coach in league history to lift the Vince Lombardi Trophy more than once.

On Sunday, in Kansas City’s NFL championship game against the San Francisco 49ers, the 65-year-old can move into an even more exclusive group of coaches. In what will be his fifth Super Bowl at the helm of an NFL team, he can establish himself as just the fifth man to oversee three victories at the showpiece event.

So far, Bill Belichik (six), Chuck Noll (four), Joe Gibbs (three) and Bill Walsh (three) are the only four head coaches in NFL history to have won more than two Super Bowls.

Also steered Kansas City to Super Bowl glory in 2019 season

Before last year’s triumph over the Eagles, Reid led the Chiefs to victory at Super Bowl LIV in 2019. At Miami’s Hard Rock Stadium, the Missourians produced a stunning fourth-quarter comeback to beat the San Francisco 49ers 31-20 and clinch the second Super Bowl victory in franchise history.

Under Reid, who has been in charge of the Chiefs since January 2013, Kansas City have been virtually ever-present in the NFL playoffs, and have become the dominant force in the AFC. Indeed, with Patrick Mahomes pulling the strings at quarterback, they have contested the AFC Championship Game in each of the last six seasons, winning it four times.

Chiefs appearing in fourth Super Bowl under Reid

After lifting the 2019 AFC title to set up their Super Bowl LIV triumph, Kansas City again won the conference championship 12 months later, to secure back-to-back Super Bowl appearances. However, they were runners-up to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the 2020 NFL title decider, losing 31-9 at Raymond James Stadium.

Two years on, the Chiefs’ third AFC crown under Reid brought yet another appearance in the NFL’s biggest game - and the team’s subsequent victory over the Eagles yielded the second Super Bowl triumph of the franchise’s Reid-Mahomes era.

Now, following a 17-10 win over the Baltimore Ravens in the conference championship two weeks ago, Kansas City are preparing for an incredible fourth Super Bowl in the space of five years.

Andy Reid fact file:

  • Chiefs head coach since 2013
  • Previously Eagles boss from 1999 to 2012
  • Preparing for fifth Super Bowl as a head coach
  • Led Kansas City to victory at Super Bowls LIV, LVII
  • Lost Super Bowl LV with Chiefs
  • As Eagles boss, beaten at Super Bowl XXXIX

Reid beat former team in Super Bowl LVII

Although he has been an NFL head coach for a quarter of a century, Reid has only taken charge of one other franchise in the league: the Eagles.

Lasting from January 1999 to December 2012, his Philadelphia tenure yielded nine postseason appearances and one NFC title - but he was unable to steer the team to an NFL championship. Having reached the Super Bowl in 2004, Philadelphia were denied the NFL crown by the New England Patriots, going down 24-21 in Jacksonville, Florida.

Fourth-most wins by an NFL head coach

Named the AP Coach of the Year in 2002, Reid has amassed a career haul of NFL wins that makes him one of the most successful head coaches in league history. His tally of 258 victories in regular-season games puts him at number four on the all-time wins list, ahead of fellow two-time Super Bowl champion Tom Landry.

When it comes to playoff wins by a head coach, Reid’s total of 25 leaves him second only to Belichick, who won 31 postseason games and six Super Bowls as New England Patriots boss, before ending his 23-year tenure in Massachusetts last month.

Before becoming a head coach, Reid also won Super Bowl XXXI during a seven-year spell as an assistant at the Green Bay Packers.
