While many will be focused on the performance of Usher during the Super Bowl’s halftime show, there is also another well-established artist who will be singing the national anthem before kickoff on Sunday evening.

Reba McEntire & the national anthem go way back

This Sunday, February 11th, the large majority of the nation will sit down to focus on the country’s biggest game: Super Bowl LVIII. From the fanfare to the multi-million dollar commercials to the epic halftime show, it will undoubtedly be an incredible show. Yet, before everything gets going, fans will be treated to the traditional performance of the national anthem and this year promises to be a treat. Indeed, country music fans will likely be celebrating as an icon of the genre is set to sing the ‘Star Spangled Banner.’

That’s right, before the Kansas City Chiefs and San Francisco 49ers face off in the 2024 Super Bowl, three-time Grammy winner, Reba McEntire will take to the stage to perform the famous hymn, one which she has a special relationship with. McEntire was of course discovered as a singer some 50 years ago at the 1974 National Finals Rodeo in Oklahoma when she sang the national anthem. Since then she has gone on to perform the song at a number of significant events, however, this is the first time that she will be making an appearance at the Super Bowl. “I’m honored to be part of something as big and historic as the Super Bowl coming to Las Vegas for the first time,” McEntire said when the performance was announced.

It’s about the process for Reba McEntire

Speaking with CBS last month, the 68-year-old explained that it comes down to repetition when preparing for a performance. “You just warm up like you do a concert and sing it about five or six times, and get in there, and do it,” McEntire said before explaining that she was first told about the opportunity by her manager.”He said that they wanted me to sing the national anthem at the Super Bowl, and I said ‘Oh my gosh. Well, let me think about that,’” McEntire said in January. “And Rex Linn, my boyfriend, who is a huge football fan, he said, ‘Yes, she’ll do it. Absolutely.’ So that’s where we’re at.” In case you didn’t know, McEntire won’t be the only star performing on Sunday prior to kickoff. The country music star will also be joined by Post Malone, who is singing “America the Beautiful,” and Andra Day, who will be performing “Lift Every Voice and Sing,” while Usher will be the man in the middle for the halftime show. Super Bowl LVIII is set to kick off at 6:30 p.m. ET. Don’t miss it!
