Who is Tyler Huntley the former Pro-Bowl quarterback starting for Dolphins in Week 4 against Titans?
The Dolphins have got a problem under center which means the obvious question is, ‘Who is going to solve it?’ This Monday, the path to the answer begins.
With both the team’s starting quarterback and his backup out injured, it’s now clear that the Dolphins are in a bit of a pickle and that’s before we touch on the team’s record. While it’s still early days, there is very little room for error, meaning the replacement signal caller that was signed needs to hit the ground running.
Dolphins to give quarterback Tyler Huntley his first start
Whether you’re a Miami Dolphins fan or not, there is no doubt that you would have heard about Tua Tagovailoa’s recent concussion which has seen him placed on injured reserve and the subsequent injury to backup QB Skylar Thompson. What you may not know, however, is that shortly after Tagovailoa’s injury, the franchise, apparently aware of the immediate need for cover, signed Tyler “Snoop” Huntley.
Where the details are concerned, Tagovailoa continues to be sidelined after sustaining what was the third concussion of his career during Miami’s Week 2 loss to the Buffalo Bills. To date, no official word has been given on when he is expected to return. As for Thompson, the 27-year-old injured his ribs during last Sunday’s 24-3 loss to the Seattle Seahawks. Thompson was then replaced by Tim Boyle, who went 7 of 13 for 79 yards. It’s with that as context that we come to the Monday Night Football clash between the Dolphins and Tennessee Titans which will see Huntley receive his first start for the team under center according to comments from Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel on Saturday.
If you’re wondering, Huntley has come to Miami following a four-year stint with the Baltimore Ravens where he served as Lamar Jackson’s backup. A 2022 Pro Bowler, Huntley was a key contributor during the Ravens run to the playoffs that year after Jackson suffered an injury late in the campaign. His record during the regular season stands at 3-6, while his postseason tally is 0-1. Regarding attributes, it’s interesting to note that Huntley, like Jackson, is a player whose game is built around mobility and evasion. In much the same way as Jackson, he is capable of long runs while also using his agility in tight spaces to extend plays. On the other hand, Huntley has had a history of fumbling and has often fallen victim to sacks.
Whatever the case, the reality is this: The Miami Dolphins are currently 1-2 as they prepare for the Week 4 clash with the Titans. That’s to say there is quite frankly no margin for error and no luxury to criticize the man who will be under center when kickoff rolls around. If the Dolphins are to keep pace in the AFC, they will need a win on Monday night and with that in mind, it’s got to be said that the team’s quarterback issues aren’t the only cause for concern. Cornerback Kendall Fuller and offensive tackle Terron Armstead have both been ruled out which makes things complicated. On the other hand, the Dolphins can still count on the services of Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle, arguably the best receiving duo in the NFL right now.
