While the move may not drastically change Kansas City’s immediate outlook with Mahomes firmly set as the starter, it gives head coach Andy Reid an intriguing option behind his franchise quarterback.
Why Fields makes sense for Kansas City
The Chiefs have long prioritized having a capable backup behind Mahomes, especially as the team continues to compete for championships. While Mahomes rarely misses time, the Chiefs were reminded of the importance of quarterback depth after he battled an injury late in the regular season, making the addition of an experienced backup like Fields a logical move.
Fields brings starting experience and athletic ability that could prove valuable if Kansas City ever needed to turn to its second quarterback. The former first-round pick has appeared in more than 50 NFL games in his career and offers a dual-threat skill set that could fit well in Reid’s creative offensive system.
Fields’ mobility and arm strength give Kansas City a different style of quarterback compared to Mahomes, which could also be useful for preparing the defense in practice when facing mobile quarterbacks around the league.
A potential career reset
For Fields, the move could represent a chance to reset his career. The former Chicago Bears first-round pick has shown flashes of high-level play during his time in the NFL but has struggled to find consistent success as a full-time starter. Joining Kansas City now gives him an opportunity to learn under both Mahomes and Reid, widely regarded as one of the best offensive minds in football.
Reid has a long track record of helping quarterbacks develop and thrive in his system, which could make Kansas City an ideal environment for Fields to refine his game.
