Why are NFL coaches wearing camo? Significance of special hoodies
This month, the NFL is once again paying tribute to the US’s armed forces, as part of an initiative that has raised millions.
During November, NFL coaches and players will be sporting special camouflage-print hoodies, as part of the league’s annual ‘Salute to Service’ initiative.
Organized around Veterans Day on November 11, Salute to Service is a tribute to the US military. Established in 2011, the campaign “represents the NFL’s unwavering dedication to honoring, empowering, and connecting with our nation’s service members, veterans, and their families,” the league says.
How much money has Salute to Service raised?
In the 13 years since its creation, Salute to Service has earned more than $73 million through fundraising efforts in partnership with the Bob Woodruff Foundation, Pat Tillman Foundation, Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors, United Service Organizations and Wounded Warrior Project.
Among the ways in which Salute to Service raises money is by selling the special-edition apparel that NFL coaches and players can be seen wearing during November. You can purchase these items via the NFL’s online store.
“NFL proud to highlight those who serve our country”
“We are grateful for the men and women serving in our armed forces for the many sacrifices they make every day while defending our country,” NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said in 2023.
“Their courage and dedication assure us so many important freedoms, and the opportunity to enjoy a little football.
“Salute to Service has allowed the NFL family to convey our thanks to service members, veterans and their families and support organizations within the military community across the world. The NFL is proud to highlight those who have served and currently serve our country.”
