Arizona Cardinals wide receiver Marquise ‘Hollywood’ Brown’s need for speed recently got him arrested.

The 25-year-old was clocked by authorities to be driving at 126 miles per hour on a highway near Phoenix, almost twice the speed limit in an area where you could only go up to 65 mph.

When is speeding considered criminal in Arizona?

Brown was arrested under charges of criminal speeding, which is defined by Arizona state law as behavior that results in any of the following violations:

  • Driving faster than 85 mph on highways and freeways, regardless of speed limit
  • Going beyond the speed limit by 20 mph
  • Traveling at 35 mph while driving in a school zone.

Brown was booked into the Maricopa County Jail and was released after an initial appearance before a judge. He will next appear in court on Aug. 23.

The Cardinals issued a statement regarding the incident, saying they knew of Brown’s situation and that they had reported it to the league. It is yet to be determined if the NFL will issue any disciplinary action of its own.

Penalties for criminal speeding

Criminal speeding is considered a class 3 misdemeanor, and can carry a sentence of up to 30 days in jail and $500 in fines. Jail time is rarely handed out for the offense.

Unlike standard speeding tickets that are cleared from your record after a certain period of time, instances of criminal speeding remain on a person’s record until they are 99 years old.

In the state of Arizona, misdemeanor and felony convictions will stay on your file for life.
