The Dallas Cowboys began training camp in Oxnard, California with their first practice this morning. Though there is a lot of excitement that the team will be getting one of their best defenders back this season, they’ll have to wait a little longer to see him play. Cornerback Trevon Diggs tore his ACL after just two weeks last year, forcing him to miss nearly the entire season, and now he’s been placed on the active/physically unable to perform list.

Why is Trevon Diggs on the PUP list?

It was already expected that Diggs could be put on the PUP list, and it’s no reason to panic. Diggs has been working out throughout the offseason and should be ready to go by the time the regular season starts, and being on the PUP list allows him to still return at any point during training camp and the preseason. He is still recovering from the ACL tear, and the Cowboys seem to just be playing it safe before the season starts.

If Diggs is still on the PUP list when the season starts, he will have to miss at least four games. That seems an unlikely scenario though, and if he’s able to return even by the first preseason game on August 11 against the Los Angeles Rams, it will still leave plenty of time for Diggs to prepare for the season.

Last year, Diggs signed a five-year, $97 million contract extension after leading the league in interceptions in 2021 and making a second Pro Bowl appearance in 2022.

While Diggs is out of training camp, rookie Caelen Carson, Nahshon Wright, and Israel Mukuamu will be competing for starts behind him, DaRon Bland, and Jourdan Lewis.
