Why does Tom Brady regret doing Netflix’s Roast?
While he clearly took everything in stride during Netflix’s hugely popular show, the NFL legend revealed that it wasn’t a hit with those who matter most: His kids.
With the kind of viewership numbers that Netflix enjoyed during “The Roast of Tom Brady”, it would be accurate to say that the show was a huge success. On the other hand, NFL’s greatest player has admitted that he didn’t appreciate the full scope of what he was getting into, nor how it could affect those closest to him.
Tom Brady has some regrets about his “Roast” experience
It’s been about a week since Netflix aired “The Roast of Tom Brady” in which we saw a bevy of former teammates, friends, and comedians making jokes at the expense of the man NFL fans consider to be the GOAT. There were a ton of laughs punctuated by some slightly awkward moments, but all in all, it was a good time. Except, now it seems that it wasn’t entirely appreciated by the man himself. During an appearance on “The Pivot Podcast” on Tuesday, Brady admitted that he didn’t like the effect that all of the jokes had on his family.
“I loved when the jokes were about me. I thought they were so fun. I didn’t like the way that it affected my kids. It’s the hardest part about - the bittersweet aspect of when you do something that you think is one way, and then all of a sudden you realize I wouldn’t do that again because of the way that it affected, actually, the people that I care about the most in the world.”
Is Tom Brady being too sensitive?
Now, there were in fact a few awkward moments on the night such as when Brady confronted Jeff Ross on stage after a jab at New England Patriots owner Bob Kraft’s massage scandal. Yet, where Brady’s children are concerned, it has to be said that no jokes were made about them. As for his ex-wives, they weren’t out of bounds. Indeed, while it seemed to be a surprise to the former signal caller, everyone else appeared to take it as par for the course when comedians laid into his highly publicized divorce from Brazilian supermodel Gisele Bündchen, as well her new relationship with jiu-jitsu instructor Joaquim Valente. According to reports, Bündchen was not pleased such that Brady even apologized to her.
Interestingly, the 46-year-old still insisted that he’s a big fan of comedy even if he didn’t completely understand what he was in for when he agreed to do the show with Netflix. “It makes you in some ways a better parent going through it. Sometimes you’re naive. You don’t know. You get a little, ‘Ah, s***.’ When I signed up for that, I love when people were making fun of me. I always said when I was going through all the Deflategate stuff in 2015, 2016, I watched three things on TV: I watched Premier League soccer, I watched golf, and I watched comedy shows, because every time I turned on SportsCenter, I was like, ‘Are you f***ing kidding me?’ I just want to laugh. I wanted to do the roast because Jeff Ross became somebody that I knew. You just don’t see the full picture all the time.”
“It’s a good lesson for me as a parent. I’m going to be a better parent as I go forward because of it. At the same time, I’m happy everyone who was there had a lot of fun. I do think for me, if we’re not laughing about things, we’re crying. We should have more fun. What do we love? We love laughing in the locker room. Let’s do more of that and love each other and celebrate other people’s success.” If you say so, Tom.
