Why isn’t Adam Thielen playing for the Panthers against the Bears? NFL Week 5 injury status

Three players, Josey Jewell (hamstring/groin), Shaq Thompson (Achilles), and Andrew Raym (concussion), will miss the Sunday game due to injuries.

This week’s matchup between the Carolina Panthers and Chicago Bears offers a few developing storylines in the background. The Panthers have transformed since switching to veteran quarterback Andy Dalton in their previous game, while the Bears, despite struggling to find consistency, are beginning to take steps in the right direction with their young quarterback.

Panthers’ offensive transition with Dalton

Carolina’s offense has looked notably different in the past two weeks after the team transitioned to Andy Dalton at quarterback. Dalton’s ability to make quick decisions and get the ball out efficiently has been a stabilizing factor. While not perfect, the Panthers’ offensive line has shown improvement, particularly in pass blocking. According to Pro Football Focus (PFF), the unit holds a 73.9 pass-blocking grade—suitable for second-best in the NFL. However, they face a tough challenge in the Bears’ defensive front, particularly on the interior.

On the flip side, the Panthers’ defense, especially their pass rush, has been a concern. Carolina’s defensive line has struggled to generate pressure without standout defensive tackle Derrick Brown. The unit holds a PFF pass-rushing grade 55.0, ranking 28th in the league. Even with Jadeveon Clowney on the edge, the Panthers lack the necessary complementary pieces to make their pass rush consistently effective.

While the Panthers may not boast an elite pass rush, the Bears’ offensive line hasn’t been without its issues. Though Chicago’s overall pass-blocking grade is 67.6 (17th in the NFL), the line has been inconsistent. Left tackle Braxton Jones hasn’t taken the next step many expected, and rookie right tackle Darnell Wright has had his ups and downs. With injuries and underperformance at key positions, such as center and guard, this matchup will be a critical test for the Bears’ front.

When we talk about players who will be respected for performing, first and foremost is Panthers veteran wide receiver Adam Thielen, who was placed on the injured reserve list two weeks ago as part of a flurry of moves.

Adam Thielen suffered a hamstring injury while making a 31-yard touchdown reception in the second quarter. He changed into street clothes at halftime and did not return to the game. Panthers head coach Dave Canales later stated that Thielen’s right hamstring injury won’t require surgery. Thielen is entering his 11th NFL season, his second with the Carolina Panthers, following a successful 2023 campaign where he achieved over 100 receptions and 1,000 yards.

Thielen participated in a full and limited fashion this week at the Panthers’ practices. Since he didn’t appear on the injury list, he is expected to be on Carolina’s game roster for Sunday.

This upcoming game means a lot for both teams. It presents an opportunity for the Bears to strengthen their offensive line further and develop their defensive front. For the Panthers, it’s a chance for Dalton to continue his impressive performance against a tough defense. Both teams are in transition phases, making this a vital contest to assess their progress.
